What is a Chromebook?

Laptops, notebooks and tablets are a booming business nowadays. Almost everyone has one and a smart phone too. It might be difficult to keep up with all these technology changes and one of the devices you might have overlooked is the Google chromebook, so let’s have a look at what a chromebook is.

The Cloud :

When using a laptop, notebook or tablet you’ll probably spend a lot of time surfing the internet. A more common name for working on the internet is using ‘the cloud’. Therefore, your device needs to be well equipped to use the cloud. According to Google, laptops and notebooks have many components that are unnecessary. Google has decided to produce a computer that gets rid of all the extra ‘ballast’. The search engine company already owns many cloud services. The most used are Gmail and Google docs. Google relies on storing data on the cloud rather than storing it on the device itself. Besides that, most people use the internet to browse the net, play games or surf on Facebook. Other applications are rarely touched. With these things in mind Google invented the Chromebook. A Chromebook looks like a netbook. It is just as thin and weighs a lot less than a laptop. When you open the device you’ll miss windows or another operating system. Instead, you’ll only see a login screen. After logging in you’ll get the possibility to browse the internet and use cloud based applications.

Google Chrome :

The Google Chromebook (obviously) comes with the internet browser chrome. This is not a bad thing as chrome is one of the most used internet browsers nowadays and it’s quick too. So in short: a Chromebook is a netbook without a hard drive but with Google chrome and cloud applications. The device will not be able to replace your computer but it can be a good replacement for people who are interested in buying a netbook and use the internet most of the time. These people need to realise that there are online versions of Excel, Powerpoint and Word too.

It comes with a dual-core Intel Atom processor. When you buy the product you are ready to log in and use it immediately, because there are no products to be installed on a hard drive to begin with. Simplistic as it is, Google also updates and protects the Chromebook automatically. Effectively this means that the device is getting better in time instead of worse. Another handy fact is that you can access everything you’ve stored on your Chromebook from another computer because it is all stored on the internet. A full battery will last around 8.5 hours which is plenty of time to browse the net!
