Update: Right Now No Bar On Internet Upload Speed! Thanks to Government to Understand the Situation!

News Source: BDNEWS24

The Government of People’s Republic of Bangladesh announced that Bangladesh will decrease the internet upload speed for the whole country. Government has already lessen the upload speed of internet and BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) has already announced this and implemented this for all users in Bangladesh. Just before the “World Telecommunication and Information Society Day – 2013”, Bangladesh Government has taken this decision. Now the upload speed is only the 25% of the previous upload speed. Government has told that the reason behind mitigating the internet speed is nothing but the illegal VoIP business. Government believes that if they mitigate the upload speed then they will be able to stop the illegal VoIP business.

Is It the Only Logical Way to Stop Illegal VoIP Business?

Fig : How the VoIP Works

But this sounds a bit ridiculous. Because other than this way, there are other ways through which it is technically possible to detect and stop VoIP business.

There are several ways like tracking the SIM’s (Subscriber Identity Module) which are used by the illegal VoIP businessman. This is very much possible because the SIM which are used by VoIP business those are static and their positions are not changing. So, mobile operators can track those SIM cards and can stop those.

Also those SIM cards can be tracked by checking the incoming and outgoing calls. Those SIM cards which are getting used in the VoIP business, should have only outgoing calls. So, this is can be tracked by the mobile operators.

There are other ways like using some special software to track the VoIP calls in the international gateway.

Is the Decision Good?

From technological point of view, this is not fair at all to lessen the upload speed just because of stopping the illegal VoIP business because there are other ways through which it can be stopped. On the age, when the whole world is going for higher internet speed and global communication through internet, this kind of decision is really not in favor of the people who want to live with the technology.

As the decision has already been implemented, the individual internet users are facing problem to use some of the most used application through internet like Skype and other video chatting application where uploading speed of internet is an important thing. People will also not get sufficient speed to upload the files in the internet.

Though the government institutions and some software and IT related companies are out of this restriction, but still there are a lot of people who are using internet to earn money as freelancers as Bangladesh is a huge market of the freelancers and for outsourcing job. This decision will surely give a negative effect to those users of internet.

As the government is here with the motto of “Digital Bangladesh”, we hope that Government will take some step which is suitable for the time being and will not effect the current internet users and will solve the illegal VoIP issue with some other restriction.

I think…
The ISPs or BTRC could block VoIP protocols (SIP, H.323) to
avoid illegal VoIP termination. It may not fall any effect for those who run
VoIP business legally. They definitely have alternate way. Don’t they?
