Make Sure Your Entertainment Center Is The Envy Of All Your Friends!

The entertainment center is a key feature in any home. Proper design is what makes this area work. When planning ways to upgrade, there are significant elements to consider. Too much clutter around televisions is just confusing, but too few gadgets take the fun out of the entertainment. The goal is to find a balance that adds just enough flexibility without being overwhelming.

Start with the Hardware:

Hardware is what matters in an entertainment center. Install upgrades to ensure there is a source for all the latest technology. There should be gadgets to handle:

  • XM Radio
  • Pandora
  • Streaming movies
  • Digital recording

The high-definition television is just a display. The hardware around it is the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. Select a Blu-ray system, because the players can manage most DVD formats. Look for a DVD player that can incorporate streaming movies, as well.

Audio:

Surround sound is a must for a proper entertainment system along with a fine audio-video receiver. This piece brings all the components together. The A/V receiver should support all types of audio formats including:

  • Dolby Digital Sound
  • Dolby True HD

Along with a 5.1 channel speaker system, tack on a subwoofer that sits in the corner. The subwoofer will reproduce bass frequencies to add to the quality of the audio. The audio system should have at least one docking station for an iPod, as well.

Video:

The video display size necessary depends on the location of the center. As a good rule of thumb, look for a wide-screen LCD system that is at least 47 inches for a family room. The resolution should be 1080p with HD. Bedroom systems could be smaller with a 4:3 aspect-ratio display.

Remote Control:

The remote is a critical piece of equipment for the entertainment center. Look for a radio frequency remote that works from any room. If budget allows, consider an advanced remote system that will also work the lights, thermostat and other components in the home.

Cabinetry and Set Up:

A well-designed entertainment cabinet comes with little pop-up and flip-down doors that help manage the chaos. If possible, mount all televisions and the audio components to the wall. This makes the center modern and sleek looking. The cabinetry should have storage space for video games and console systems. For something a bit snazzier, look for speakers that mimic artwork at the walls or hide in the drywall.

There is no harm in mixing and matching components to get the best value, but it’s better to spend a little to get quality for high-ticket items up front. The trick to creating a truly impressive entertainment center is to be thrifty, but not cheap.
