In efforts to conserve the environment and curb the cost of gas, a good number of car manufacturers have decided to make electric models. The technology is gradually growing, and it is expected to spread to many parts of the world in the coming years. Below are some leading electric vehicle companies in the world who are trying to shift their production towards Electric Vehicle.

Nissan

Nissan took charge of the electric vehicle world when they launched the Nissan Leaf in 2010. The car has been the best-selling electric car, hitting 200,000 purchases in December 2015. The automakers have other electric models such as the Nissan Townpod, Nissan Nuvu, Nissan Land Glider, Nissan Altra, Nissan Hypermini, Nissan Eslow and Nissan e-NV200.

BMW

The Bavarian manufacturer has two models of electric cars (the i3 and I8 PHEV), but their sales are proving competitive to manufacturers with more electric models.  The company has sold over 25,000 units. BMW has made a promise to their lovers that more is still coming in the field of electric vehicles. Notably, a plug-in hybrid of the X5 crossover is next in line for the American market.

Ford

Ford hit the EV market with the Fusion Electric and Energi models. The Focus Electric was awarded the Green Car Vision Award in 2011. Ford has achieved close to 50,000 sales for its electric models.

Tesla

Tesla has ranked well among electric vehicle manufacturers with over 100,000 sales of their Models S, barely four years after its introduction. The Tesla Model S has been ranked the second bestselling EV after the Nissan Leaf. The electric model received the green car award in 2013, and it was the first electric plug-in fleet of vehicles to hit 1 billion miles. The 85D and P85D are variants of the Tesla with improved mileage on a single charge.

General Motors

General Motors has several EVs under its banner. The EV1 was their pioneer electric model, having been introduced into the market in 1996. However, its production was later discontinued in 1999. Currently, GM has sold thousands of units of Chevrolet Volt and Chevy Spark EV. The manufacturers are lining up improved EV models in 2016 and 2017.

Mitsubishi

The Plug-in Mitsubishi Outlander has done well in the market with over 100,000 sales. The automakers have also sold the Mitsubishi i-MiEV which is an entirely electric car. In 2016, the Japan-based manufacturers are lining up the Outlander PHEV, which is expected to reach greater heights in the market.

BYD

BYD has rolled out electric vehicles including the BYD Qin and BYD Tang. The company is also releasing electric buses in some developed countries.

The Geely Group

The Geely Group is a leading Chinese manufacturer of vehicles. The company sells taxis and electric cars.

Tazzari

Tazzari group, an Italian automaker produced a battery-operated car in 2009. Their electric model, Tazzari Zero that can go 87 miles when on a full charge.

Phoenix Motorcars

Phoenix Motorcars is lining up a series of electric vehicles of many sizes. The company makes trucks and SUVs. The automobiles are all electric with powerful batteries that can go up to 250 miles on full charge.

Toyota

The Japan-based vehicle manufacturers have not been left behind in the wake of electric cars. The RAV4 EV was their first sale of electric cars. Toyota later collaborated with Tesla to produce the second generation of RAV4 EV, which goes for 103 miles on a full charge and 76 miles per gallon.

Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz is also in the list of electric car manufacturers with their B-Class Electric.
