Having a cell phone can be expensive, but it has become a necessary communication device. Many low-income people cannot afford such a luxury. However, depending on the state of residence, a low income person may qualify for free cell phone service through a program called Lifeline/Linkup which is mandated by the federal government. For most customers, service is provided through Safelink Wireless for Tracfone, a subsidiary of América Móvil. Tracfone holds several contracts throughout the United States with major cell phone providers to use their networks.
Safelink is the largest provider of free cell phone service in the US. In 2011, they were providing service to more than 4 million of the 6 million people on the Lifeline/Linkup program.
What Does Safelink Provide?
Safelink provides customers who qualify for the program a free phone and up to 250 minutes of free airtime every month. Unlike other free cell phone providers, Safelink does not require their customers to sign a contract. Just like their parent company, Tracfone, Safelink’s motto is no contract, no bills and no surprises.
What Plans Are Available?
Safelink customers can choose between three different plans depending on their needs:
- Plan 1 provides 68 minutes of airtime per month, and unused minutes carry over to the next month. Three text messages equals one minute of airtime. Free international calling, voice mail, call waiting, and caller I.D are also included in this plan.
- Plan 2 provides 125 minutes of airtime per month, and the unused minutes carry over to the next month. Three text messages equals one minute, plus one additional text equals one minute of airtime. Voice mail, caller I.D. and call waiting are included. No international calls are allowed.
Plan 3 provides 250 minutes of airtime. One text equals one minute. Voice mail, call waiting, and caller I.D. are also included. No international calling is provided, and minutes do not carry over to the next month.
Customers can purchase additional minutes through Safelink, or they can purchase minutes cards through many major retailers across the country.
Safelink Eligibility :
Eligibility differs from state to state, so it is a good idea to check on the requirements before applying for a Safelink phone. However, in almost all states, the customer must be a legal resident of the state, and be approved for any of these programs: Social Security Income (SSI) disability, SNAP program (food stamps), and/or Medicaid. Only one phone per address is permitted.
