Like English and Chinese New Year, there is also Bengali New Year which is celebrated by the people of Bangladesh and some parts of India (West Bengal). In Bangladesh, they celebrate it on 14th April each year but in West Bengal, it is celebrated according to the Bengali Ponjika or Bengali Calendar.

Bengali people celebrate this Bengali New Year uniquely. The first day of the Bengali New Year is named as Pohela Boishakh. The name is like this because the first day of each month is called Pohela (first) and as the first month is Boishakh, it is named after the month Boishakh.

In Bangladesh, this New Year is celebrated by huge number of people. They welcome the new year from the time of sun shine. People gather together in a park in the capital Dhaka. The park is named as “Ramna Park”. There is a big old banyan tree in that park and the singers sing a special song “Eso hay boishakh eso eso ….” (Hello Boishakh Come Come …).

The gents wear Panjabi and Payjama; ladies wear white saree with red border. People east panta vaat and Ilsha Fish to celebrate it. A fair named “Boishakhi Mela” takes place in each and every part of the country. People gather there to enjoy and buy different things.
