The first proposal of SMS was made by a meeting of GSM in 1985 in Oslo by a German and France based GSM Company. The main documents on SMS was prepared by Fried helm Hillenbrand from Dutch Telecom and Bernard Ghillebaert from French Telecom.

SMS was considered in the main stream GSM services as a possible service for the customers.

SMS was at first thought for only GSM but now it is included also in other networks like CDMA and 3G.Some other services related to this SMS is like mobile mailing like NTT Docomo short mail and Sky Mail of J-Phone both in Japan.

The average price per SMS Globally is approximately 0.11 usd, considered that the mobile networks charge 0.4$ when connecting to different phone networks. SMS service is popular in Asia, Europe and Australia such as in North America.

The SMS in the cellular system was first sent to a SMS center then it uses a store and forward protocol. Then from here the SMS finds its destination. In SMS technology message delivery is the best case but there is no guarantee that the message will go to the recipients mobile. But the loss of message or late receipt is uncommon. But there is an option through which an user can get notified whether the messages finds its destination or not. This option can be enabled by the user. If this option is enabled then after each successful message sent, the user will be notified that message is delivered.

Transmission of message is done from user to the SMS center by using the SS7 protocol and Mobile Application Part. SMS gateway provides service to both subscribers and business users, including mission-critical message, content delivery and entertainment services like TV.

The Internet work connectivity is made by using the PLMN (Public Land Mobile Network0 or PSTN via inter-networking and gateway MSC. On some cases it is also possible to send message through email or other service by using the SMS gateway. Though SMS service logo and ring-tones can also be supplied and sent to other cellular phone’s is used for the communication of Machine to Machine. For example, there is a LED display controlled by SMS, also there some vehicle tracking companies use SMS for their transportation control.

Most of the satellite commercial satellite phone networks use the service of SMS. While early days only Iridium was only able to support only the incoming SMS but after that the outgoing facility is also added. Unlike some mobile networks there is no extra charge to send the international sms. SMS is very helpful in the cases where the coverage is very poor and voice communication is difficult to continue. In those remote areas SMS communication is used.

Short messages can be used to provide the cheap rate service to the subscribers of a telephone network. This mobile to mobile SMS facility can provide service digital service like news alerts, financial information related to banks, logos and ring-tones. SMS voting is also popular in this time. The value added service providers also used this facility by using TCP/IP protocol such as the short message peer to peer protocol.

Inbound mobile SMS is based on long numbers which are generally the subscriber identity number. But by using a small number this SMS can be used in other application like sms voting, product promotion and camping.

The GSM industry has already identified a fraud attack to the subscriber which can be delivered by abuse of SMS messaging services. Among this the most serious kind of threat is SMS spoofing. The only logical way to identify the spoofed message is to check all incoming messages to verify that they are coming from the valid subscriber and correct location.

In some countries SMS is used for some emergency service. In UK by using SMS service you can call emergency service but for this you need to register for the service first.

Emergency services are for those who are physically disable to make a voice call but able to create a meaningful text and able to contact through this. Emergency SMS services are also for those areas where the signal strength is very poor.

SMS is similar like paging but it does not need both the cellular phone active and within the range. The introduction of some standard protocol like SIM application Toolkit and the wireless application protocol (WAP) contribute a lot to increase the number of SMS service quantity. There is no doubt about the success of SMS. Only the market in Europe has reached above 5 billions in 2011.

The SMS is a store and forward service. When we send SMS it does not go directly to the recipient. At first it goes to the SMS center and the SMS center stores the message and then it is forwarded to the recipient. So,every telephone network that has SMS facility must have one or more SMS center to support this SMS facility. Short messages can be received and sent simultaneously in GSM in voice, data and fax calls.
