But to really get the most out of it, it is a good idea to utilize some 21st century technology and download the best travel apps for smart phones such as the Android or iPhone. Urbanspoon – Urbanspoon is a good way to find bars and restaurants in the London area. You decide what search criteria you want, e.g. price range, rating or type of establishment, it then scans your area and delivers the information to you free of charge.

Yelp – Yelp is a great app that can tell you the best place to go in a given area. From cafes to garages, this free app will give reviews of countless establishments, so you can make an informed choice on any number of services, wherever you are in the world.

Hailo – Another London based app that helps you find a cab in the city fast. It tells you where the nearest cab is, gives you the phone number and tells you how long it will take to arrive, what’s more, this free app allows you to add your credit card details to make paying a whole lot more convenient.

PetrolPrices Pro – This app is great if you are driving in a foreign land as it tells you where the best deals on petrol are in a given area. It costs £2.99 to download but will save a packet so is worth having for any driving excursion abroad.

London Bus Checker – If you are a tourist in London (or a resident for that matter) and need to use the bus service, this app will come in very handy. For a fee of £1.99, you can track any London bus at any given time.

Triposo – With access to over 8,000 destinations, this free app is a must. It gains information on any destination you want from wikitravel and openstreetmap, has a built in currency converter and a very useful phrase book.

    Thanks for the great read Heather! I like the app recommendations you made, so I’ll have to make sure to download them soon! Urban Spoon and Yelp will really help out since I travel a lot for my job at DISH. When it comes to the trips I take though, I always have to make sure I have a bunch of entertainment apps with me as well; my favorite being DISH Anywhere. I do love to watch TV and luckily with that app I can watch all of my shows from home, live or from off my DVR, anywhere I go. I never liked missing my favorite shows, but now I never have to even worry about that when I’m half way across the country.
